Describe how what you have learned in studying lifespan development can be used in your professional career. Refer to at least TWO (or more) developmental theories or concepts and explain how these theories/concepts apply or will apply to real-life job situations.

Idea: Sample

As a 7th – 12th grade school counselor, I am met with many unique challenges on a daily basis. I love that my job is never the same and that I should always expect the unexpected! For this particular assignment, I could discuss any two (or more) of the following theories and concepts:

(1) Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development and how it relates to counseling situations with individual adolescents as everyone does not develop at the same rate nor are all of my students at the same stage of moral development; (2) Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Theory and how understanding the identity crisis will assist me in better understanding the adolescent viewpoint; (3) Bowlby’s Attachment Theory and children’s innate need to form attachments will assist me in understanding student’s attendance and behavioral situations; (4) Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory as children – well, they just don’t think like us!; (5) Erikson’s Middle-Adulthood stage of Generativity vs. Stagnation will help me better relate to my own personal goal of becoming a generative adult as well as understanding my co-workers who may also be at that stage or unfortunately, stagnate in their careers.

That’s FIVE theories and concepts that I could include in my own paper if needed. I know that many of you are planning a career in the medical field, so think about how what you have learned will help you in understanding all patients at any age level. Or, if you know that you want to work with neonates, then look specifically at Birth and Infancy and focus your paper on those concepts. If you want to work in geriatrics, review the Late Adulthood and End of Life (Bereavement) sections and apply that information. Also, there’s a very important section in our study of Human Growth that refers to Parenthood, The Role of Worker, and Work-Life Balance that you can incorporate in your paper. I am just specifically interested in knowing that YOU can apply the information that you have learned this semester to your professional career in a positive and helpful manner. Let me know if you have any questions!

Instructions:

1. Type a 2 page summary of your findings. Be sure to address all areas outlined in the activity. Your summary should be written in complete, grammatically correct sentences. It is important to design your summary into paragraphs with an introduction, separate body paragraphs explaining each specific theory or concept with examples as to how they relate or will relate to your professional career, and a conclusion paragraph. Please refer to the rubric for grading. You will need to upload your document from Microsoft Word or a Google Doc for this assignment. The pages should be double-spaced using 12 point Times New Roman font. Please type your name, assignment title, date, and course section in the top left corner of the first page only. On the second page, you will type your name and “Page 2” in the upper left corner
