PROPOSAL- pop culture research assignment: “Call Her Daddy. Hosted by Alexandra Cooper” (podcast)
Basically, bring a critical eye to the discussion of this podcast.
“Call Her Daddy” is raunchy and in-your-face.
These days, young women are often told — even pressured — to be sexually wild ‘n crazy: especially white, conventionally attractive, slim, young, able-bodied women — like Alexandra Cooper.
There’s no shortage of raunchy, in-your-face pop culture these days. With lots of PRODUCTS being sold, at the same time!
Is this necessarily progressive? Is this liberating or exploitative? Is this original and genuinely transgressive or same-old same-old beneath the surface? A combination?
The questions are: Who gets to take up space? Who doesn’t? Whose idea of sexy is this? Does this really challenge or does it conform? Or both …
And remember Merri Lisa Johnson (Jane hocus, Jane focus)? She reminds us to go beyond an unexamined “it’s all good” stance, to bring a critical sensibility – and to be unafraid of contradictions. 
So: Bring a critical eye to your analysis
And of course, be sure to follow the general criteria of the Project. Apply concepts, course readings, etc.!
POP CULTURE RESEARCH PROJECT (20%)
Popular culture offers women and nonbinary people many sites in which to explore, reclaim, critique, and display a liberatory sexuality. You will research, analyze, and write about how the creators are claiming space for non-oppressive expressions of sexuality. You will also reflect on your learning process.
CRITERIA
Research what feminist theorists and cultural commentators have said about this work and its cultural context. Your submission should refer to at least 3 articles from reputable sources and at least 2 course readings (Jane Hocus Jane focus & Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power)
1) To begin: Briefly describe the creators and the work. (Don’t assume your instructor will be familiar.)
2) Explore and analyze the messages, meanings, and significance of the work through the lens of this course. And please remember: Sexuality is an arena of paradox and contradiction. You can be critical of an artist and their work, even if you love and admire ‘em.
Connect your discussion to course themes and concepts, such as: • Feminist & queer resistance strategies: Transgressiveness; naming forbidden topics; re-staging exploitative scenes; re-appropriating what was stolen; subverting negative stereotypes • Moralism and other regulatory mechanisms; • Intersectional analysis; • “Othering” and Orientalism; • Pleasure and danger; • Dualisms & binaries (natural/unnatural; pure/polluted; male/female; gay/ straight); • Female DESIRE and erotic power; • Feminist conflicts (expansionist vs. protectionist approaches); • Sexological discourses; • Transactional intimacy and the influence of “the marketplace”; • The Charmed Circle; • Labels & identities.
3) Reflect on your personal response to the work.
Word length: 1,500-1,800 words. 1.5 spacing.
Citation style: In-text citation: author last name/ page number, e.g.: “quotequotequote “(Vance 241) OR “quotequotequotequotequote” (Rubin, cited in Vance 242). Works Cited List: Provide this at the end.
EVALUATION: Your submission will be evaluated on the depth of your research (see above); the strength of your analysis and use of course themes & concepts; and the clarity of your discussion and personal reflections.
