The years from 2-6 are filled with remarkable cognitive accomplishments. Children all over the world learn the language(s) of their environments including vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. By 5-6 many children learn to read and their thinking becomes more sophisticated. Children develop from being egocentric toddlers with limited understanding of self and others to school age children who have more self- awareness and self- control. During these early childhood years, children learn that it is not always about them. In Project 4, you will recognize the interactive effects of the environment, parenting, teachers, and other important factors on development. As you review Chapters 5, 6, and 7 and review the PowerPoint presentations associated with these chapters on early childhood, please reflect on the multidimensional development that occurs. Beginning with these early childhood years, note the biological, social and environmental influences and how children gain confidence, curiosity, imagination and intellect in their general development during these crucial years. Please reflect on the developmental process—how very early growth and development provide the foundation for growth and development in the early childhood years. Please reflect on the importance of both nature and nurture and their interaction in the early childhood years with regard to healthy life development (physical, cognitive, and social/emotional). Also, please remember, as an educator, you need to periodically evaluate your own personal beliefs, classroom philosophy, and potential biases and how these affect your educational practices.
Project Relevance
Project 3 will open the window of appreciation to the vast amounts of learning that occurs in the lifespan from two to seven years of age. In today’s society, educators need to have a strong understanding of how family, community and schools influence the amount of development that can occur in students in all areas of their life. Upon completion of the project, you will begin to develop some of the tools needed for effective teaching in today’s changing environment. With this understanding you will also realize the complex role you as an educator will have in your students’ lifespan development.
