Project Description for Part II

  • Project Description for Part II

Write a four page paper that 1) addresses how particular concepts, theories and/or course content apply to a case described in an article on domestic or family violence and 2) evaluates this article using Weller’s Media Guide to determine how well the article follows these recommended guidelines.

Important Note: The article that you use in Part I must be the same article that you use in Part II.

Step 1

Prepare a four page (and only four pages) paper that contains the  following:

  • An introductory paragraph which explains the purpose of the paper
  • A briefsummary of your chosen article (use this from Part I)
  • An analysis (or applied learning) in which you apply particular concepts, theories and/or course content to the case described in the article.
  • An evaluation regarding how accurately and thoughtfully the article presents the subject matter (use this from Part I)
  • A concluding paragraph

 Additional information about your paper:

  •
    • The paper requires a cover sheet (title page) and a reference page.
    • The total number of pages for this assignment is 6.  I will deduct 1 point for every page that exceeds the 4-page required length (for the body of the paper)
    • The paper should follow APA style.  Please use the BEHS 453 APA Style Guide that I’ve provided for you as this is the guide that I use to grade your papers.
    • The paper should be double-spaced
    • Paragraphs should be indented 5 spaces
    • The pages should be numbered.
    • Do not include an abstract.

Step 2

  • Submit your paper in your Assignment folder as either an attachment in Word or rtf.  Due week 7

Helpful Hints

  • Be concise! Remember that the body of your final paper should be only 4 pages long.  I will deduct 1 point for every page that exceeds the 4-page limit.
  • Part II of this assignment requires that you do more than simply summarize the media article. Failure to include concepts, theories and/or content from the course will result in lost points.  This assignment is intended to demonstrate applied learning (i.e., how well you are able to apply concepts, theories and content from the course to “real world” examples).
  • If you quote or use any material from a media article, course materials or any other resource materials be sure to cite and reference this information following APA guidelines (a style guide is located under Course Resources).
  • The BEHS 453 APA Style Guide located under Course Resources provides a sample of a cover sheet (title page).
  • Remember that the introductory and concluding paragraphs need to relate to each other.

Course Outcomes and the Applied Final Project

As a result of completing the final project, students will demonstrate their ability to:

  1. distinguish among the complexities and multifaceted nature of domestic violence to assess institutional, community, and individual responses
  2. apply knowledge of research and theory of domestic violence to identify the scope of the issue within society and dispel commonly held misconceptions
  3. locate and evaluate resources relevant to domestic violence issues in order to effect social change

Grading Reminders for the Applied Final Project

  • Part I is worth 15% and Part II is worth 25% (40% of the final grade)
  • Part II of this assignment will be graded using the “Writing Rubric” located under Week 7 Content.
  • Please Note:  Part I of the Applied Final Project will be deducted 1 letter grade for late submission.  Assignments will not be accepted more than one week past the due date.
  • Please Note:  I will not accept late submissions for Part II of the Applied Final Project unless prior arrangements have been made and the student can demonstrate that an extreme circumstance prohibited him/her from submitting the work on time.
