For this project, you are to prepare an “Educational Coursework Plan” database using the Microsoft Access relational database application. As part of this project, you will collect data and generate reports that will present information about your educational coursework and future occupation. Much of the information you will need to complete the project can be found on the Internet, but some of it may need to be determined by visiting the GCC Transfer and/or Career center. When you have completed the project, you will have: identified an occupation, set of possible job opportunities, and listing of course that you must take to qualify for an educational degree, in the field you choose. You will also have identified which of the “in the major” courses can be taken here at GCC and then articulated to the transfer school you plan on attending.
The object of this project is to teach you the basics of database design and implementation. This project allows you to discover lots of information about a potential career, available jobs, degree programs, transfer schools, and coursework, but it is not a substitute for your GCC counselors. It would be wise to make an appointment with your GCC counselors to develop a Student Educational Plan (SEP), transfer plan, and establish some career goals with a plan for your success.
The database will consist of five table objects, one query object, five form objects (one for each table object), and three report objects. The project can be accomplished in eight steps.
- Gather all the relevant information to be entered as data into the database
- Design and create tables to store the data
- Design data entry forms that can be used to enter the data into the database tables
- Enter the data collected into the appropriate database tables
- Establish the primary key/foreign key relationships between the database tables (the “join” or primary key/foreign key relationship between tables)
- Define a query
- Prepare three reports
- Submit your work to Canvas
