Please compose a 250-word post and then reply to five other students’ posts. This week we focus on the Progressive Era, a period from roughly 1890-1920 in which ordinary Americans (eventually political leaders) tried to reform and change American society in virtually every aspect. There were four key goals of this movement, and women — though they did not they have the right to vote — were leading the effort to make these changes.
Progressive Era Goals and Reforms (with examples):
- Make America more modern (example: The Women’s Suffrage Movement)
- Make America a safer place to live (example: Carrie Nation and the Temperance Movement)
Answer both prompts.
PROMPT #1:
- Summarize the two (2) examples above. In what ways are these reforms still present in today’s society?
PROMPT #2 (The Triangle Fire, 1911):
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
- Based on the video clip above, what were working conditions like in American factories in the Progressive era?
- Describe the major events of the fire? How many people lost their lives?
- Was the fire preventable? What lessons did Americans learn from this tragedy?
