HIST 3332
Test 1
Test 1 consists of two sections: Identification and Essay. Follow the instructions for each section. Your test is untimed and open note (and video). Submit your test answers using Word, PDF, or GoogleDocs in the Test 1 Dropbox in the Week 5 module of our D2L site. Your answers in both sections of the test should be well-written and free of grammatical errors. Your essay should have a clear introduction, separate paragraphs, and a conclusion. The length of your essay is up to you but be sure that you provide a detailed response using the materials at your disposal. Remember to answer questions in your own words. While using quotes and references to external sources to support your answers is encouraged, any evidence of plagiarism will result in a score of “0” for your test. If you are unsure about the topic of plagiarism, please contact me and I will be happy to help you.
Identification Section (50%): Select FOUR of the following terms below. Using roughly three to four detailed sentences (a paragraph or so) for each term, you will identify the term, explaining what it means, roughly when it took place (not a specific year, just the time period), who or what the term is associated with, why it was significant at the time, and any other details you believe are important to fully understanding the term. Not every term will have answers to each “what,” “when,” “where,” “why,” and “who” question, but do give as complete of an answer as possible.

Essay Section (50%): Choose ONE of the following essay questions below to answer in detail. Be sure to use specific details and examples from your notes, readings, assignments, and videos to aid you as you write your essay.
- The relationship between African Americans and whites in the South during Reconstruction and New South eras can be viewed as a struggle for economic, political, and social power. Discuss that struggle in those three distinct areas. What steps did white southerners take to prevent African Americans from fully gaining economic, political, and social equality in the South and how did African Americans respond to these efforts? Be sure to include the idea of “accommodation” in your response. (Videos 2, 3, 4)
- Both African Americans and Native Americans were compelled to create their own separate communities in the late 19th Century. Discuss the factors that led to these distinct communities within the US; how did these groups form their communities? What differences were there in how and why these communities formed? What role did political and social issues play in the formation of these communities and what was the long-term impact on both groups? (Videos 2, 3, 4, and 5)
- Women in the United States were expected to perform certain distinct roles in the late 19th Century. Describe these roles and the sources that reinforced and promoted the “ideal” woman and the additional pressures this could place on working-class or rural women. How did women use this role to expand the scope of their interests beyond the home during this period? Be sure your answer includes not just in “what” women did, but “how” their gender was expected to act both at home and in society (Videos 6 and 7)
