Pre-Laboratory Assignment for Multistep Synthesis

The multistep sequence consists of Experiments 32A, 32B, 32C in Pavia 5th ed., Experiment 37 in Pavia 4th ed. (HO), and the Reduction of Benzil experiment (HO).

1. Write a Gold Sheet and a flow chart for each of the 4 experiments in the multistep sequence.

2. On a separate sheet of paper, calculate how many grams of benzoin you need to start with in Experiment 32B in order to synthesize enough benzil to use as the starting material for experiments 32C, 37, and the reduction of benzil handout. a. You must show and use the balanced chemical equations and moles in your calculations. b. Assume that you will get a 60% yield in experiment 32B. (This most likely will not be your actual yield.) c. Plan on producing enough benzil to: i. Take an IR of benzil ii. Take a melting point of benzil iii. Run the three experiments according to the directions iv. Have enough benzil as a back-up chemical supply in case you need to repeat one of the three experiments. v. Be sure to state any and all assumptions which you make while doing these calculations.
