Prezi or PPT presentation on African American Sculptor Selma H. Burke selected works:
You will certainly want to make clear how the work of art relates to your overall theme: being a female African American artist in post civil war American and traveling abroad during WWII in Europe. Make comparisons among the works you have chosen.
The Caption or header: Each work of art will need its number, the name of the artist, title of the work of art, its date, its medium, its size, and the institution/individual that owns the work of art. Place this information just below or next to each included image. This should be provided in MLA format.
Deliverables:
- 3-5 Artworks that tie in to your chosen theme. -being a female African American artist in post civil war American and traveling abroad during WWII in Europe
- Proper MLA captions for each artwork
- A brief commentary for each artwork making connections both to the theme and making comparisons across artworks to support your theme and thesis. (Be sure to cite any references properly here as well in MLA format)

- Exhibition on selected works of Selma Burke:
- 1980 Bronze sculpture of MLK (influenced by the experience of African American experience in US)
- Portrait of FDR and the four freedoms (Controversy surrounding true author of image on US dime impact of being a woman sculptor and using a male dominated medium)
- Bust of Mary McLeod Bethune (Honoring civil rights activists)
- Frau Keller (German Jew) created while In Europe expression of her experience during WWII
- John Brown (abolitionist) created during Harlem renaissance area influenced by relationship with McKay and her role in the Harlem Renaissance
Her education was rich, working under famed Harlem Renaissance sculptor, Augusta Savage, and studying abroad in both Vienna and Paris. It was in the latter that she met Henri Matisse, who praised Selma’s work. From her time in Europe, Ms. Burke created one of her most significant pieces, Frau Keller, a German-Jew, in response to the growing Nazi threat she witnessed abroad.
