Business Systems Analysis

3. Imagine the worst possible reports from a system. What is wrong with them? List as many problems as you can. What are the consequences of such reports? What could go wrong as a result? How does the prototyping process help guard against each problem?

Hints Chapter 8, Problems/Exercises, Question 3:
Describe the characteristics of the worst reports. Consider different aspects of the report that could go wrong such as format, layout and content, and describe what could go wrong with them under different categories. E.g. the content could be wrong if it has late info, irrelevant info, wrong info etc.

Describe the consequences.

Discuss the benefits of prototyping. Users are involved early and have immediate feedback so above issues are generally identified early and fixed in time.

4. Given the guidelines presented in this chapter, identify flaws in the design of the Report of Employees shown. What assumptions about users and tasks did you make in order to assess this design? Redesign this report to correct these flaws.

Hint Chapter 8, Problems/Exercises, Question 4:
The form can be improved in a number of ways. You need to apply all the good practices described in the textbook chapter.

Org name is missing. Where is the date of info? Date of Report, page #, is the list sorted?

There is a potential to improve many things. I leave up to you to find out the rest. Make sure you give your version of the re-designed report. You are supposed to redesign the report to correct the flaws.

3. Transform the E-R diagram of Figure 9–21 into a set of 3NF relations.

Hint Chapter 9, Problems/Exercises, Question 3:
Students often struggle with this question and hence I am almost giving away the solution. Please study it and try to understand it completely and ask your questions in threaded discussion area.

The 3NF relations are:

VENDOR (Vendor No, Address)

PRICEQUOTE (Vendor No, Item No, Quote Quantity, Price)

PART (Item No, Desc)

PART RECEIPT (Order No, Vendor No, Item No, Quote Quantity, Date, Order_Quantity)

Petrie’s Electronics Case, Chapter 8, Questions 1–5.

1. Using the guidelines from this chapter and other sources, evaluate the usability of the page design depicted in Figure 8-1.

Hint  Petrie’s Electronics Case, Chapter 8, Question 1: Refer to the Table 8.16 (Common Errors when designing the layout of the web pages) and comment on titles, navigation, balanced layout etc.

2. Chapter 8 encourages the design of a help system early in the design of the human interface. How would you incorporate help into the interface as shown in Figure 8-1?

Hint Depends on your view point. Suggestions might include an explanatory link near the progress or a prominent link for “Help” in the navigation bar along the top.

3. Describe how cookie crumbs could be used in this system. Are cookie crumbs a desirable navigation aid for this system? Why or why not?

Hint Petrie’s Electronics Case, Chapter 8, Question 3: Could be included along the top of the main content area. They are a desirable navigation aid in general.

4. The page design depicted in Figure 8-1 links to an Order History page. Sketch a similar layout for the Order History page, following guidelines from Chapter 8.

Hint Petrie’s Electronics Case, Chapter 8, Question 4: Make an attempt. No answer is right or wrong. There are multiple ways to approach it. If you have an account with amazon.com (my favorite site) or any other similar site such as buy.com etc., then login into that site and look at how they display your order history. Don’t copy it as it but that should give you an idea about what it looks like in a professional real world site. Also using the best practices highlighted in the textbook, list what feature or what guidelines are applicable in your sketch/layout. You can also list what you avoided using the common errors described in the textbook. The most important point about this question is that you need to develop a prototype or concept using some kind of pictorial layout. You can do it in PowerPoint, Word or even Excel. Don’t just write theory. You need to demonstrate application that theory in the form of some pictorial representation.

5. Describe how the use of template-based HTML might be leveraged in the design of the ‘No Customer Escapes’ system

Hint Petrie’s Electronics Case, Chapter 8, Question 5:
It helps in standardization
