Assignment #3
- During last year’s budget crunch, several deserving employees of the Bureau of Procedures (BP) were denied promotions. This year, an unusual number of BP employees retired. The bureau chief suspects that the denial of promotions resulted in increased retirements. Of the 115 employees denied promotion, 32 retired. Of the 58 employees promoted, 9 retired. Present a contingency table, and analyze this information.
- Hyram Drant, a research analyst for the city fire department, suspects that old water pumps are more likely to fail. From the data in the accompanying table, construct a contingency table and check Drant’s suspicion. How else could this problem be analyzed?
(Hint: The sub-categories of “age of pump” can be “less than 30 years” and “30 years over”; the sub-categories of “pump performance” can be “pump failed” and “pump did not failed” as indicated by the problem. Organize the data and build a contingency table according to these subcategories and then analyze.)

Gilliland et al. examined the diabetes issue in the paper; “Preventative Health Care among Rural American Indians in New Mexico” Following is a contingency table showing cross-classification of educational attainment and diabetic state for a sample of 1273 Native Americans. HS is high school.
