Social workers are often involved in community work. In this regard, social workers can play an
important role in helping communities become more sustainable. This online learning activity
initially requires students to describe what they think are the key elements/factors/characteristics
of a community that is socially, environmentally and economically sustainable.
Students are then asked to provide an example of a community project that incorporates these
elements into a well-integrated community project. Students than are asked to provide a rationale
as to why they think the project they have chosen promotes economic, social and environmental
sustainability and what role social workers can play in implementing the project.
Groups are highly encouraged to be creative in their presentation. Students can review potential
examples of sustainable projects on the internet but the project they share with the class must be
unique and of their own making. Art, drama, videos, pictures, music, Prezi can all be used to
portray a sustainable community and relevant, effective community project.
