Assignment 2 – PAGE 2-3: Review the attached Virtual presentations which address not only the effective that domestic violence has on the victim, but also the child. As a social worker we must attempt to understand the process and the cycle in which domestic violence rears it’s ” ugly head”. There is not a “fix all remedy”.
There is however, often a heavy presence of victim blaming. People often say ” Why did you stay?” or ” If it was me I would have ….”.
The cycle of control and strategic power influence of the psychological attack that occurs with domestic violence is a gradual process that occurs in a family very similar to substance or alcohol abuse; every family member adapts to the problems and takes on their role to be able to survive in the unavoidable environment.
As a social worker , we must ” meet our client where they are at” and respect their right to self determination. . Often this means that the client can not immediately leave an abusive relationship.
We should be mindful not to judge or enforce our basis’ onto the client. For this week’s discussion: Place yourself in the social worker position. You are assigned to oversee and assist a repeated domestic violence victim” Kimberly who had four children (the youngest two by the abuser who lives with her).
Kimberly has the support of her mother and father, but they live in Canada, which she cant travel to due the COVID-19 pandemic. Kimberly has been hospitalized in the past due to the abuse.
Her children are misbehaving regularly in the home due to the daily confinements of the COVID- 19 containment regulations. Her husband has been drinking more than usual. She verbalizes to you that she cant leave the apartment because she will lose her Section 8 if she abandons the apartment ( Section 8 doesn’t know her husband lives there).
QUESTION: How do you safely process Kimberly’s current situation and provide guidance and a plan of action for her and her children with the knowledge you have of her situation?
