Cased-Based Discussion 03: Climate Change and Canadian Cities
To begin the third case-based discussion, watch the video, Clean Energy: Seeking Renewable Sources, which can be accessed through Ares. After watching the video, read the Globe and Mail article, “Preparing cities for a changing climate – before it’s too late,” which can also be access through Ares under Unit 08.
In this article, Bozikovic makes the case that Canadian cities are now becoming increasingly involved in dealing with and preparing for climate change, particularly in the form of windstorms and floods. To what extent are cities able to act on their own in building resilience to climate change? What steps do Canadian cities and other levels of government need to take to address the problem of climate change? Post your response to these questions and reply to your groupmates’ postings in the Case-Based Discussion 03 forum.
In thinking about these questions, you will start to familiarize yourself with the new kinds of environmental challenges that are now facing many Canadian cities. You will also get a sense of the political conditions under which cities are required to interact with provincial and federal governments in Canada.
