Contemporary Diagnoses Reading Analysis

1.William Connolly wants to examine how “the Trumpian politics of persuasion is joined to shock politics” (23). What role does “affect” play in the Trumpian politics of persuasion, and how is it connected to “shock politics”? Note: you will probably have to use your thinking-cap to come up with your own clear definition of shock politics!

2.Connolly, Singh, and Cornell/Seeley all agree that Trumpian politics has deeper roots than Trump himself. Choose two texts. What is the main difference between their diagnoses of Trumpian ‘fascism,’ and which do you find more persuasive?

3.A key term in our discussions both of fascism and of reconciliation is resentment. Using one or two texts from the last two weeks (Connolly, Singh, Cornell/Seeley, Coulthard), try and answer the question: what role does resentment play in contemporary politics for this (or these) thinkers? What is a potential objection to their diagnosis of this role of resentment?
