Policy Action Plan

Objective: The objective of this assignment is for students to understand how various policies impact individuals who are different from themselves and to develop an action plan for how they address those policies in their practices.

Assignment: The student should interview someone who is different from themselves and experiences some form of marginalization due to one or more aspects of their identities (e.g. age, gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, ability level, or other). This individual can be the same person who was interviewed in the BPSSS, or it could be a different individual. The student should identify a policy that impacts this individual in some way and explore with the individual how that policy has impacted or currently impacts them. This policy could be an agency, local, state, or national policy. Some potential examples are residency requirements for certain services or how people who have been previously incarcerated cannot access government benefits. Based on their interview, the student should explore and then create an action plan that has the potential to address this policy. The paper should be no more than three pages. Page one should provide a summary of the interview and the interviewee’s perspective regarding the impact of the policy. Page two should be a very brief summary of the policy and the rationale for its existence and intended and unintended consequences of the policy. The third page should be the student’s action plan for how this policy could be addressed by social workers. This assignment should be 3 pages in length, and include at least 3-5 resources.
