News Report Requirements

Objective: The purpose of the news reports is to find a news article (from reliable news sources, e.g. The Vancouver Sun, The Globe and Mail, CBC, etc.) that relate to the issue of Canadian politics. On one hand, it allows you/us to keep in touch with current events. On the other hand, the news reports will allow you to apply the material discussed in class and read in the book or articles to a news item. There are five news reports to do. Their due dates are the following: May 24, June 7, June 21, July 5, July 19. Note that the news article you will choose cannot be more than a week old prior to the due date (so, for example, no older than May 17 for due date of May 24).

Here are the details for the grading and formatting of the news report:

Format:

– 1-2 pages

– Double spaced

– Font: Times or Times New Roman

– Font size: 12

– Margins: 2.5cm

Content:

– Summary of your news article

– Link to Canadian politics (either a theory, a concept or a definition discussed in class and/or the readings so far)

– Critical analysis or comments (how do you think this event will unfold? What is not being told in the news article? What are your impressions about this news event? etc).

– An Appendix where you attach the news article you use to do your news report

Presentation:

– Put your name, student number, course title and date

– Write a title

– Put the content (which include the summary, the link to Canadian politics, the critical comments and the news article; all elements are mandatory). The content section should be written in multiple paragraphs.

– For quotations or ideas taken from the text, please make sure to use the appropriate referencing using APA style. Note that APA requires in-text citations and a bibliography (the bibliography does not count in the page count). For more information about APA style, please refer to the APA guide attached in the Moodle page.

Grading:

The News Reports (5 in total) are worth 25% of the final grade. Each assignment is therefore worth five (5) points. The grading will be done using the following rubric (see below):
