Mentors are trusted advisors that give constructive criticism and provide information for you in many areas.

1. Who is the mentor you chose for this course? Give the person’s name, position/title, and explain how you met this person. How long have you known your mentor? “Name: Martha, Position: Assistant Administrator. 7 years”

2. Why did you select this person to be your mentor? “She works for the organization (Home health staffing agency for physical therapy) I work for. I report to her regarding patient related issues/concerns. Also the organization i work for sold twice to another managements, but they kept her and let other employee go”

3. Why will this person be a good mentor?

4. How will your chosen mentor help you achieve your career goals? ” Opening a Home Health Care Staffing Agency for PT”

Then post a reply to two other students suggesting an approach for them to obtain their career goals.

Student 1:

Hey everyone!

The mentor that I have chosen for this course is Whitney. She works in practice management and oversees multiple specialty clinics that are at the hospital. I met her because she is my managers supervisor, and when there are issues that my supervisor cannot fix, Whitney steps in to solve the issues.  I have known her for a little over a year. I selected her because she is pretty high up in hospital administration and oversees multiple clinics. She is apart of the team that sets and enforces many standards across all the specialty clinics at the hospital.

I know Whitney will be a great mentor because she is extremely patient and very kind. She handles tough situations calmly and seems to hold herself together very well. She has a lot to deal with, but she seems to enjoy her job and always has a smile on her face. She is educated when it comes to managing clinics, and knows multiple aspects that relate to management in healthcare. She has experience working with many different providers and staff members from different backgrounds and cultures.

I think she will help me achieve my career goals, because for one, she has a lot of say with who moves up within the clinics and who does not. She is interested in helping people who want to progress their careers at the hospital. She also works directly with Julie, who is the top person for memorial medical group and is everyone’s boss. One thing that I am lacking is patience when it comes to dealing with co-workers. I think she will be a great mentor because she can help me develop those necessary skills to handle tough situations with patience. She just has a lot of experience overseeing many different types of clinics and providers, so she has a lot of knowledge that I need in order to be successful as a healthcare administrator.

Student 2:

Hello Class,

The mentor that I chose is a Jeff Wicker, a career health care administrator (HCA) in the United States Navy. He started his career at the lowest rung of the ladder and ascended to the Executive Officer position at the medical facility at which I am assigned. One day while conducting a positive counseling session, I revealed that I am a healthcare administration student online. That’s when he divulged to me that HCA was his major in college. I respectfully asked him to be my mentor and was accepted. It has been an excellent mentor-mentee relationship for about a year now.

He is an excellent mentor who is extremely knowledgeable, patient, great listener, and genuinely gives candid feedback. He regularly assesses my strengths and weaknesses as he provides guidance for my success as an HCA. He expounded some significant associations and licensures such as the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) to become a competitive healthcare administrator. He also introduced me to the Health Care Administrators Association (HCAA), Certified Healthcare Administrative Professional (cHAP), Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), Association for Healthcare Administrative Professionals (AHCAP), Licensed Nursing Home Administrator (LNHA), Licensed Assisted Living Facility Administrator (ALFA), and the financial aspect and licensure as in Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CFHP), and the significance of the Masters in Health Administration (MHA) degree to boost career.

The purpose of the mentorship is to provide professional, informational, and beneficial relationships between HCA students and leaders in the healthcare industry. The mentorship program is designed to create opportunities for HCA students to receive guidance by professional leaders with extensive experience in healthcare administration. Mentor may help with exploring and setting careers goals, developing contacts in relation to type of health care facilities of work, and identifying resources as healthcare administration, including hospitals, clinics, health systems, and long term care facilities.

By learning from the experiences of their mentors, students gain practical advice and valuable insight about leadership, career success and networking, critical thinking, communication and interpersonal skills. Students also benefit from guidance on career and interrelation and interrelation opportunities with other HCAs, job seeking strategies, resume development, and interviewing skills. Mentors contribute to the personal growth and professional network that can make a difference in a student’s success.

To help me achieve the goals listed above, we agree to and planned on the following:

1). Meet monthly and regularly to discuss in person including phone and video conversations.

2). That both mentor and mentee agree to be accessible for informal and formal discussions.

3). Help build network with other healthcare executives outside of the military.

4). Membership of national healthcare executives associations
