PLEURAL EFFUSION: PATHOPHYSIOLOGIC CONDITION

Purpose:

To provide the student with a research learning opportunity by reviewing, analyzing, and summarizing scientific literature on a specific disease process. The presentation provides the student with a learning opportunity to develop synoptic skills (analyze, trend, and summarize) for scientific literature and present a conclusion of the current understanding of the pathophysiology behind a chronic/acute condition.

Activities:

In conjunction with course faculty, select a pathophysiologic alteration and complete a powerpoint presentation with a peer. See Rubric for point breakdown.

Presentation should be 5-7 minutes in length.

Available Topics:

Due week 5: Polycythemia, MDS, Vaccines, Cardiac Cycle, COPD, Pleural Effusion, Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis, A fib, Postpartum CM, Takotsubo’s CM

Due Week 10: Premenstrual Syndrome, Portal Hypertension, Pancreatitis, Cirrhosis, SIADH, Pyelonephritis, PMS, Anxiety

Guidelines:

Select one of the following disease processes to discuss and “teach” the class. The pathophysiologic alteration you want to explore in great detail. This may be in conjunction with a concurrent research project or as part of the other nursing courses. For this course, the topic will be a pathophysiologic condition or disease; this is not to be a nursing problem.
Consult with faculty regarding the relevance of the alteration to the course objectives if there are any questions.
The student is NOT to solicit papers and use references from students in prior sections. This should be your own work, library search, and writing. There are resources via the Writing Center and the Librarian, and the course professor who are able to assist you.
Complete a literature search of the past five years (unless are of historic value to the review). As part of the literature search, include sources that address genomics, prevention, early detection, overall system involvement, and current management. Use all RELEVANT scientific and scholarly sources. Have a reference page at the end in APA format!
The journal articles, book chapter on the condition, and scientific literature must be targeted to the health sciences audience- you will explain a plan of care to the lay public or “patient”. The references must be the original article (or accessed electronically through a database) and not a review of the article from another source, i.e., newsletters, The Lancet review, or similar publications; Web-page articles are not allowed (unless an NIH-type of scholarly work that is web-published before journal publication). You may not use sources that are not peer reviewed, i.e. Up to Date.

A logical sequence of the slides should include: (SEE RUBRIC FOR GRADING SCORE)

Research-based on the normal physiology of the organ/tissue
Genetic and genomic basis/implications of the disorder (if applicable)
The description of the disease/symptoms commonly experienced
Report research experiments on animals is acceptable
The actual pathophysiology of the disease
The treatment, implications of the disorder, and medical discussion/comparisons of the disorder
The implications for advanced practice nurses in planning care for an individual with the disorder (advanced practice nursing journals allowed)
One slide has to educate the PATIENT (layman’s terms) on their disease and treatment.
Reference page with at least 5 references in APA format!!
For this assignment, there should be a minimum of 5 and maximum of 12 quality scientific articles selected (no more than 2 book chapters may be included in the references) and the annotations written.
Due weeks 5 and 10 depending on your disease chosen. Assignment submission is done electronically through Canvas (includes TurnItIn review) by the date the assignment is due.
The presentation is yours! Be creative! This presentation is from an advanced practice nurse perspective, developing a clinical plan to manage this patient. You may give handouts with quick notes on the disease and treatment for your colleagues. You have free reign to come up with your presentation and handouts you would like to provide.
There is to be a reference page prepared in alphabetical order as the final slide. This will be helpful for your peers!
