The time has come for you to craft your own leadership story. Imagine that you have just been hired into your dream role at your dream organization. It is your first day with your colleagues and they have invited you to introduce yourself and your approach to leadership to help them get to know you better. You decide to tell your “leadership story” as a way to introduce who you are, what you value, and how you view and approach leadership.
As you craft your story, consider the insights from our Week 8 resources for insights into what makes for impactful stories; consider the lessons from master storytellers like Pixar regarding the rules for great storytelling. Think about your characters, the challenges, the story arc, and the insight you want to convey as a part of your story. You may want to also pull out your leadership autobiography assignment that you crafted in MSEL 575 to refresh your memory on your leadership story.
As a rehearsal for yourself to share with others, create a short (5- 10 minute) video where you share your leadership story with a clear “lesson” or insight that explains to others what leadership
To accompany your video, write a 1 – 2 page reflective memo that captures your reflections on the following:
- What did you learn about yourself from crafting your leadership story?
- Where and when might you imagine sharing your story with others?
