In this activity, you will be mapping 3 major European cities and providing some geographic background for each of them. You may use more than one map, if needed. You may also search for your own blank maps to use. Follow these instructions to complete the assignment:

Map It (12 points)

1. Select 1 major city found in Europe from each of climate types (3 cities total):
   • Mediterranean
   • Marine West Coast
   • Any Severe (Continental) Midlatitude climate
2. Map the location of these 3 cities on your map.
   • Use a dot to represent the location of your city and label the city name.
   • Include the name of the country in which your city is located on the map.
3. Map water features associated with each of these cities
   • If the city is along the coast, shade the ocean/sea/etc. blue and label the water feature.
   • If there are any navigable rivers that run through the city, draw and label the river.
   • Note that some cities are both coastal and have a navigable river (i.e. Dublin)
4. Use a color, other than blue, to shade other important features associated with the city’s site and situation and label those. (At least 1 per city).
   • Examples: Use shading to identify and label the climate type or physiographic region of the location. If the city is located at the base of a major mountain range or contains major physical features (glacial, tectonic, etc.) you can sketch and label those.

Analyze It (9 points)

1. For each location, provide the city name, country, the city’s population, and the country’s population. You will need to search the city population on your own.
   • Example: Oslo (pop. 681,067), Norway (pop. 5,467,439)
2. Choose one of the following questions to answer for each of your cities. You may answer the same question for all cities or choose a different question to answer for each of your cities. Each response should be roughly 3-5 sentences long.
   • What factors contribute to the climate type where your city is located?
   • Other than climate, what physical characteristics may influence/be a full factor for settlement and population in this city?
   • If this city contains remnants of the Medieval European City, describe one of the characteristics and discuss why it exists. Provide the location (latitude and longitude or cross streets) of the specific characteristic you are referring to so that someone might be able to find it using Google Maps or other similar mapping technology.
