Title of Your Paper Not Bolded is Introductory Heading Title
This is an electronic template for papers written in Aspen’s APA style for students. The purpose of the template is to help you follow the basic writing expectations for beginning your coursework at Aspen University. This template will demonstrate formatting, citations, use of references, and use of headings. Add the purpose statement as your last sentence of the introductory paragraph of all papers.  An introductory paragraph and purpose statement is required in all assignments submitted.  The last sentence of the introductory paragraph will be: The purpose of this paper is . . . .
Formatting
Margins are set at 1 inch for top, bottom, left, and right. The first line of each paragraph is indented a half inch (0.5″).  The line spacing is double throughout the paper, even on the reference page.  The font style used in this template is Times New Roman.  The font size is 12.  When you are ready to write, and after having read these instructions completely, you can delete these directions and start typing.  The paragraph formatting should stay the same.  If you have any questions, please consult with your instructor.  Please pay close attention to word count under the assignment description.  A general role is that each paragraph has a minimum of five (5) sentences.
Citations
Citations are used to reference material from another source.  When paraphrasing material from another source (such as a books, journals, website articles, etc.), include the author’s last name and the publication year in parentheses.  When directly quoting material word-for-word from another source, “use quotation marks and include the page number or paragraph number after the author’s last name and year” (Moore, 2019, p. 5).
Using citations to give credit to others whose ideas or words you have used is an essential requirement to avoid issues of plagiarism.  Just as you would never steal someone else’s possessions, you should never steal their words either.  To avoid potential problems, always be sure to cite your sources by referring to the author’s last name and the year of publication in parentheses at the end of the sentence, such as (Moore, 2019) and page numbers if you are using word-for-word materials, such as “The most important strategy for mastering APA format is to utilize the current version of the APA Manual” (Nethers & Argentine, 2019, p. 356).  Note that the punctuation comes “only” after the citation, not before the citation.
Use of References
The reference list should appear at the end of a paper (see the next page).  It provides the information necessary for a reader to locate and retrieve any source you cite in the body of the paper.  Each source you cite in the paper must appear in your reference list; likewise, each entry in the reference list must be cited in the body of your document.  The initial line of each reference is not indented; however, subsequent lines of each reference are formatted using a hanging indent of a half inch (0.5″).  A sample reference page is included below; this page includes examples of how to format different reference types—books (Nethers & Argentine, 2019),  journal articles (Black & English, 2019), and website articles from government website (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], National Institutes of Health [NIH], National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 2019).  Please again note that the hanging paragraph format is used for the reference list.  Please note that resources utilized outside the course need to be published within the last five (5) years.
This is Level One Heading
As you may note above, Headings are used to separate topics.  They are also used to separate different levels of content inside one part of a paper.  If you have a complex paper that requires several levels of headings, use the instructions within your current APA manual on page 62.  Note that active hyperlinks are not used in academic writing.  Level One and Level Two Headings are provided here as an example.  Please ensure that you have an abbreviated heading for each topic listed in the assignment description.
This is Level Two Heading Flushed Left
The use of formatting, citations, references, and headings help build the structure of your writing.  They provide a common format that aids your readers in navigating the writing as they digest your thoughts.  There are five (5) levels of APA headings with the first three (3) different heading levels that you may utilize the most.  Please note the difference between each and utilize them appropriately.
Conclusion
In the concluding paragraph, restating the main topics can remind readers of the academic journey upon which they have just traveled and help them recall the points you made along the way.  When writing your paper, please utilize a conclusion as a main heading.  The last paragraph may not be presumed as the conclusion.  Do not state in conclusion or in summary, as there is a clearly identified conclusion heading.  Instead, go on to merely discuss concluding remarks.  Additionally, please ensure that you adhere to due dates to avoid late penalties from being deducted from your assignment submission score.  Review Aspen Policies regarding late penalties.
