Do not simply restate/copy the text material. Please answer TWO of the following questions. Please limit your answers to 800 words for each question. Do not copy directly from the text; whenever possible use your own words.

1. Describe, discuss and compare two social structure or social process theories (or one of each). Include an analysis on the limitations and possible pitfalls of each theory.

2.Compare and contrast two major official sources of crime and delinquency data. Include an analysis of the problems associated with crime reporting and suggest ways to solve these problems.

3. Many theories have been proposed which attempt to explain the cause(s) of criminal/delinquent behavior. Which theory or theories do you find most persuasive? Why? With this theory or theories in mind, examine how society should practically respond to criminal behavior considering the major goals of punishment. Does your theory of causation affect how society should respond?

Frequently Asked Questions:

What citation format should I use?

Any citation format (MLA, APA, ASA, etc.) is fine as long as you are consistent and use the same format throughout. Please refrain from using sources of information other than our class materials. In-text citations of the readings should include page number(s) and citation of the lectures should include the date of the lecture.

Can I use external sources of information for my essays?

No. The class materials (text, lecture, discussion) are more than enough to thoroughly answer all of the essay questions. Please do not use or plagiarize external sources.

How are the essays graded?

The essays are graded based on the content of your responses to the prompt. Students should address all parts of the prompt and engage in a critical analysis of the questions and ideas presented. This course places an emphasis on critical analysis, encouraging you to go beyond regurgitating the ideas from the text to instead engage with the course concepts in interesting, creative, and critical ways. It is not enough to simply answer questions with a “yes” or “no” and certainly not enough to copy/paste/re-word ideas from the readings.

Do I have to write the full 800 words?

While the strongest essays typically reach the word limit, some students are able to effectively convey ideas and provide critical analysis in fewer than 800 words. The most important thing for your grade is that you clearly and effectively address all elements of the prompt and engage in a critical analysis of the ideas.

What happens if I go over 800 words?

Probably nothing (if you are within reason). But please do your best to stay under the word limit. Essays that go way beyond 800 words will not be looked at favorably when grading!
