Using a picturebook adaptation of a fairy tale that is appropriate for an elementary-aged student, analyze this adaptation of the fairy tale. These books are available to check out at the Arthenia L. Joyner Library (Links to an external site.) and library ( you can choose any fairy tale but let me know which one will you pick )
Compare this picturebook to an “original,” corresponding fairy tale (preferably from the textbook, but this isn’t required). How has this story been changed? Do these changes reflect the two cultures? In what ways does the picturebook reflect the presumed child audience? As we’ve discussed in class, incorporate your analysis of the pictures/images into your interpretation of the picturebook.
This project will be housed on Microsoft Sway (Links to an external site.), which we will explore in detail in class. This platform will provide ample space to upload images, which you will then analyze. There will be a thesis at the beginning of the presentation, stating the message of the picturebook and/or the differences between the “original” and picturebook fairy tales. This will not be a typical essay. There should be at least 5 key images chosen from the picturebook, and then a paragraph (3-5 sentences) written below each. A works cited and citations are to be included.
How to cite Nikolajeva’s article: Nikolajeva, Maria. “The Verbal and the Visual: The Picturebook as a Medium. Children’s Literature Review, edited by Tom Burns, vol. 142, 2002, pp. 85-108.
