Problem 33.  At t=0, a block of mass 5kg is at the origin and moving with velocity V(o). Also at t=0, a constant force F(a) = 25N acting in the positive x-direction is applied. This problem is interested in the state of motion of the block at the final time, t=2s.

(a) suppose that initial velocity is V(o)=5m/s

  (i) use dynamical and kinematical arguments to compute the velocity of the block at t=2s

(ii) use dynamical and kinematical arguments to compute the position of the block at t=2s

(iv) from (ii) compute the mechanical work input to the block by the applied

  (v) from (iii) and (iv) compute the kinetic energy of the block at t=2s

(vi) verify the result for (v) employing the velocity determined in (i)

(b) suppose the initial velocity is V(o)= -5m/s

      Let (i-vi) apply as well.

Part 2 of problem

(a) under the same conditions suppose the initial velocity V(o)= 5m/s

using (i) and (ii) from part 1

(iii) instead find the initial momentum of the block

(iv) compute the mechanical impulse provided to the block by the applied force

  (v) from (iii) and (iv) compute the momentum of the block at t=2s

(vi) verify the result for (v), employing the velocity determine in (i)

(b) under the same condition suppose velocity V(o)= -5m/s

Solve for conditions asked in part (a)
