Assignment 1:
1. Determine a worthwhile topic for your paper loosely defined by the themes of the class. The syllabus is the starting point to look for the topic that might interest you. For example:
-
-
- Sweatshops
- Corporate Responsibility
- The limits of the market
- Advertising
- Environmental issues
-
2. Your second task is to focus on the readings of that course section that correspond with the topic that you choose and think on that specific topic more sharply and narrowly. I very strongly recommend for this stage that you use, along with the assigned readings, other sources, for instance, encyclopedias such as:
- Marcoux, Alexei, “Business Ethics”, The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Fall 2016 Edition), Edward N. Zalta (ed.), URL = <https://plato.stanford.edu/archives/fall2016/entries/ethics-business/ (Links to an external site.)>.
- A History of Business Ethics (Links to an external site.), by Richard T. De George (University of Kansas)
- Society for Business Ethics (Links to an external site.), the main professional society for business ethicists
- Zicklin Center for Business Ethics Research (Links to an external site.), at The Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania).
- The Business Ethics Blog (Links to an external site.), by Chris MacDonald, Ted Rogers School of Management. This website contains links and commentary on current issues in business ethics.
3. For the assignment, you should present a PROPOSAL for your paper. Your proposal should include:
- A brief account of why it would be relevant for you to inquire in that topic/situation/case/etc from an ethical perspective. Which of the moral theories we discuss in class do you most clearly apply to your topic? Explain and make sure you support your justification with arguments and appropriate textual evidence.
- ONE focused questions that reflect your current thinking about the topic you choose in a cogent, and perhaps creative way.
- You must include a draft of your bibliography. This bibliography should identify a list of three sources different from the material included in the course. You can include books, articles, journals, etc. Most important, address the ways that you think that the resources you plan to use seem to be useful to your topic.
4. The proposal should not be longer than 3 pages, word count at least 550.
