I have a philosophy essay of at least 4 pages due by may 15. It is based off of Chapter 1: Moral Theory(PAGES 1-67), from the book ANALYZING MORAL ISSUES 7TH EDITION!!! PLEASE READ THIS NEXT PART CAREFULLY: Worth a maximum of 40 points
DUE MAY 15 This is an opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of the three main moral theories that
justifies a higher course grade than that attained through the regular assignments. Points
awarded are based on the degree of understanding of the three main moral theories as covered
in the course that is demonstrated by the essay. In order for points from this assignment to be
added to one’s course grade, the level of understanding demonstrated must be at least equal to
that higher course grade.
For example, if points from this essay would raise your grade from a B+ to an A, but your extra
credit essay is a D, the points will not be added to your point total. If you have a D and earn a
C on the extra credit essay, the points will be added to your point total.
The following does not count for credit: Summaries and aspects of the theories that go beyond
textbook and Blackboard material .
ASSIGNMENT QUESTION: DEMONSTRATE A THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF UTILITARIANISM(MILL), DEONTOLOGY(KANT), AND VIRTUE ETHICS(ARISTOTLE) IN YOUR ARGUMENT IN RESPONSE TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTION. WHEN SHOULD ONE OF THE ABOVE MORAL THEORIES TAKE PRECEDENCE OVER ANOTHER?☺ Use examples based on one or more of the assigned readings.
☺ This essay must be your own thought, and it must be an argument.
It’s always great to consider a counter argument, but be careful not to fall into a compare and
contrast essay.
The essay will probably take about four pages. Only material necessary to make your
argument (and demonstrate your understanding of course concepts) should be included. But,
remember, the purpose of the essay to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the theories.
Keep in mind that having the following makes for a better essay:
• An introductory paragraph that lays out the structure of your essay.
• A clearly stated thesis in your introduction.
• Unified and well developed paragraphs that clearly support your thesis.
• Clear topic sentences for each paragraph.
• A concluding paragraph that summarizes your main points.
Be concise and to the point, and always remember that the most important thing is to explain
why. Philosophy is much more concerned with the justifications for beliefs than the beliefs
themselves. DO NOT USE SOURCES OTHER THAN THE TEXTBOOK, HANDOUTS, AND LECTURE!!!
