Case segment 2 (Quality of Life, Contextual Features, & Organized Problem Solving): Case segment 2 should be no longer than 2-3 pages, typed, double-spaced. This segment should include the last two assessment sections and a problem-solving section. Student analysis writing should demonstrate assessment skills (describing what is observed in the case) and higher-level skills. These higher skills include, for example:

  • For quality of life, classification of the patient’s quality of life with reference to functional criteria that justify the rating; recognition of any quality-of-life bias against the disabled or elders; recognition of how quality-of-life concerns are shaping the plan of care.
  • For contextual features, classification of the family’s communication and hierarchy pattern; synthesis of assessment data to determine appropriate methods of interacting with such a family; evaluation ofthe appropriateness of referral to child or adult protective services; recognition of limits to confidentiality or to provider claims to conscience, etc.
  • For problem solving, an organized approach, such as definition of the problem, identification of possible resolutions, evaluation of options, and justification of the choice. (In an actual clinical situation, problem solving would also include implementation steps and a process to evaluation how well the solution is working.)
