In comparison to Germany’s model, the U.S.’s system appears to be more expensive and restrictive to patients. Additionally, it allows individuals to receive care based on their contributions, thereby propagating inequality in the quality of care delivery. For these reasons, individuals might argue that the model should move to a single-payer system to address the issues in public health.
However, Germany’s healthcare structure could be a better alternative to a single-payer system because its universal program caters to every citizen while ensuring service quality. According to the OECD (2019), Germany has the most insurance coverage across its population due to its universal healthcare system. Additionally, the system helps the country to ensure patients receive quality care regardless of their income (Tikkanen et al., 2020). Nonetheless, the government will need to collect higher taxes to fund the system and ensure care for all Americans. Additionally, patients might experience long wait times under the single-payer system. Therefore, a single-payer system will solve some of the country’s health problems while exposing it to others. For these reasons, the U.S. should continue to modify its healthcare structure rather than move toward a single-payer system to guarantee quality service delivery while avoiding issues regarding increased taxation and poor care quality.
