For this assignment you will need to summarize the chapter “Honest Dirt” from the book
Educated and create a works cited page.
While there are some variations, most will agree that there are some common tips to writing the summary of a source. In addition to the summarizing handout you have already read, I created these instructions on how to write a summary from the University of Washington’s Writing Center handout “How to Write a Summary” which had summarized the points from the book Academic Writing for Graduate Students, Essential Tasks and Skills which does a nice job of summarizing how to write a summary :).
- The summary should cover the original as a whole.
- The material should be presented in a neutral fashion—a summary is not exactly an opinion essay.
- The summary should be a condensed version of the material, presented in your own words
- Also do not include anything that does not appear in the original.
With these tips in mind, here are some more specific steps to get you started:
- Skim the text, noting in your mind the subheadings. If there are no subheadings, try to divide the text into sections.
- Consider why you have been assigned the text. Try to determine what type of text you are dealing with. This can help you identify important
- Read the text, highlighting important information and taking notes.
- In your own words, write down the main points of each section.
- Write down the key support points for the main topic, but do not include minor detail.
- Go through the process again, making changes as appropriate.
- Pull your ideas together on paper to create your finished summary.
- You should also create a works cited page for this assignment
