Athletes, from high school to the elite level, are under more pressure than ever. Whether promoting a sponsor or competing in the Olympics the pressure to achieve perfection can be tremendous. Many in the sports world firmly uphold the belief that that the only thing that matters is winning, but does the chance at a huge paycheck or a Gold Medal justify the mental toll? Does true competition only occur when athletes are in a good head space? Should athletes place their mental health above medal counts, and could this be of help to other (non-athletes) facing mental health struggles?
Over the next couple of weeks read, watch, and listen to several sources on this topic (From: Gamechangers) and formulate an argument, support your argument with evidence from the sources, convince your reader to agree with your stance.
The challenge of this assignment is to create your own argument, avoid summarizing the sources (which are someone else’s argument) instead examine the sources carefully and notice how the sources speak to one another, on what points do they agree, disagree, or give insight into the topic.
- Write a 5-7 page argument essay, including a strong, clearly worded thesis statement
- Cite 4-6 sources using accurate MLA
- Cite direct quotations- one word, phrase, or sentence (no quotations longer than one sentence)
- Incorporate one counterargument
- Include (on a separate page) Works Cited Page in MLA format
- Edit for accurate grammar, spelling, and punctuation (Fewer than 5 errors)
