A 6-7 page paper, double-spaced, carefully proofread.
In this essay, I’d like you to demonstrate your understanding of these historical dynamics. Choose a writer (or two) from the post-WWII period.
Writer: Walt Withman ( Song of Myself) and Allen Ginsberg ( A Supermarket in California)
compare and contrast to the writer’s poems or articles and write about who influence whom? where it comes from?
According answer : To whom does your writer turn for inspiration? On whom does your writer rely? What kinds of parallel events have writers in different generations responded to? How do writers from the same region or biographical background treat similar subject matter, or elucidate an important issue? How do the differences amongst writers get revealed in their work? How and why does Whitman reappear across a century and a half? How do writers who self-identify as hyphenated depict their understanding of that at different moments in time—and why those particular moments? What techniques emerge in response to what events and why? In what ways does literature published since World War II reflect or accelerate long-standing political or social forces? Etc.
Be sure to use the biographical and contextual headnotes and introductions—this is an essay that demands not only close reading, but also, and especially, context. You’ll want to be both specific in your placing of your writer and precise in the language you use.
