Reading Response –
Based on Schechner’s identification of the different stages of the performance process, apply them to the selected readings for this week. The theme of this week’s readings was gender presentation in sport in three different contexts.
1. In the two Bleacher Report articles, can you pick out performance processes that are identified that are meant to show sameness with male athletes, and performance processes that are highlighted to show difference?
2. In the cheerleading piece, relate the author’s findings to Schechner’s terms and explain where in the performance process (proto, mid performance, aftermath) you believe their findings are situated and why.

In “Posterized” you are introduced to Shawn Bradley, a 7’6″ basketball player who endured an avalanche as criticism throughout his career. Bradley outwardly identifies how his priorities were different than his teammates, and how that affected his perception throughout the league with fans and players alike.
1. What differences do you see in Bradley’s development as an athlete, performance as an athlete in the NBA, or his life after his athletic career that would separate him from your perception of a typical athlete?
2. Why do you believe Bradley was criticized so much? Was the criticism fair? Why or why not?
