Pace Institute James Baldwin Reading Charts

first you have to choose a famous writer/author

  1. Read three texts by your chosen author/artist. Read with a pen in hand.
  2. Complete a 1-page Reading Chart for each essay, or in other words: complete three Reading Charts
  3. lastly, Compose a paragraph trying to articulate your preliminary reflections on this evidence (i.e., the three texts). Use this paragraphs to track your initial thoughts about the significance of the observations you recorded in the charts. Think on the page about why these textual details make you smile or make your brain hurt. Explore conceptual tensions within the text. Record initial ideas about relationships between content and style. Ask provocative questions. Try to notice patterns that echo across the texts you have read (e.g. recurring content, recurring thematic concerns, and recurring stylistic or structural features). Collect textual clues that might later lead you toward insights. Right now, it’s more important to attentively notice these features than to rush to judgement about what they might mean.
