The purpose of this Assignment is to apply the Practice-to-Theory-to-Practice approach and your understanding of student development theory to a student development scenario.
Instructions
A student comes to talk to you about some difficulties he is having with his first semester of college. The student really enjoys classes, but does not like the college. The student does not feel comfortable with his roommate, who is from a different culture, has a different major, and has a significant other in the room on a regular basis. The student is having financial difficulties and knows some students in the community and has been offered the opportunity to move off campus for spring semester. Due to money and roommate problems, the student is considering the move.
Given your knowledge of student development theory, use the Practice-to-Theory-to-Practice approach to help the student. (The P-T-P approach is explained in the Key Concepts in the Reading section of this unit.) It is a good idea to address each of the steps in the P-T-P approach individually so that you remember to cover each one. Additionally, answer the following questions:
- Would your advice be different at another stage of college?
- Would your advice be different if the student was happy with the overall college experience?
- How strong of a role does money play in the decision?
Remember to include an introduction and conclusion for your paper. Format your paper, including the title and reference pages, according to APA style (6th ed.).
