Organizations Mission to Life Board of Directors Discussion

Your responses should answer the questions and reply to your classmates’ postings in a meaningful way. A meaningful response states your thoughts on the question backed up with the reasoning for your position. For example, responding with “me too” or “I agree” is not meaningful. Responding with “Me too, because of this or that experience…” is meaningful.

(Note: You do not need to respond to the discussion question, it is included for your reference so you are aware of what questions the students are replying to) I posted my colleagues’ responses to the discussion question below, please respond to their post. Begin the response with Hi Judy/Nicole) (I need at least a half page response for each person) Please include references and provide the url link to all journal articles you use as references. Use current (meaning within the past 2 years) scholarly journal articles as references. Please use APA 6th edition format. Thanks)

Discussion Question: What are the characteristics that define an “effective” board of directors? Please provide at least two examples of how ” not having ” these traits can effect your organization.

Judy’s Response:

Some of the characteristics that define an effective board of directors are Integrity, diversity & inclusion focused, passion which describes a deep interest in the organization, and a drive to bring the organization’s mission to life (dedication). Without these traits, an organization will may be impacted negatively if its board member(s) is found to lack integrity and zero passion for the organization’s mission. How else can a board member stand up for an organization if they lack the passion/motivation to see its mission come to life?

Nicole’s Response:

An effective board of directors is integral in the overall success of an organization. Each member must share a passion for the commitment to the organization’s mission and vision. The mission is the compass which guides the organization. It is important to share a vision but equally crucial to have a board comprised of people from different backgrounds. Different skill sets and perspectives will encourage lively debates which should result in the best interest of the organization. Without calculated discussion, major decisions will be easily swayed by a group think mentality that might not be the best solution. Board members with different backgrounds also have the potential to connect the organization with a broader range of donors and partners. Attracting board members with the professional experience, willingness to help, and shared passion is not an easy feat. Therefore, having a strong mission statement and brand will help recruit the strongest people. Not having these traits can derail the organization from achieving progress and fulfilling the mission. Furthermore, if there is not a strong culture of stewardship and transparency the organization’s fiscal health and reputation are jeopardized. It is equally important that the board is not active in daily operations but instead communicates with the Executive Director who is responsible for advocating on behalf of the staff.
