In their own ways, these articles by Richard Rodriquez, Victor Villanueva Jr., and Norma Mota-Altman, argue the problems we encounter trying to navigate public and private spaces using our languages. All three authors provide different ways to show how we own our language and where it belongs and where it does not belong. Some of the articles provide solutions to the problems that exist in language and identity development and how it is influenced by our cultural heritage. Synthesize points from one article from the following questions: Where does language belong? Who creates the standard of which language belongs in public spaces and which ones belong in private spaces? How do we negotiate between language and culture? How does assimilation influence language identity? Is assimilation necessary or not? What price do folks have to endure to achieve success navigating these public and private spaces? What is gained or lost? You must also cite from the other two articles to defend or qualify your claims. Remember that you are encouraged to use personal experiences as anecdotal evidence when appropriate for your larger argument, but it must be limited and most of your evidence must be cited from all three articles.
