IV. One Week Study / Project Plan Assignment – Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to introduce students to the concept of planning programs based on an area of study for a one-week period for children in group settings. (While we acknowledge the importance of emergent curriculum, once an area of interest has been identified, it is beneficial for student to understand what is involved in planning learning activities for extended periods of time) This skill is one that will be used by graduates who find employment in licensed child care settings and in various other types of settings where children’s programs operate. Format: Part A: Web of Activities (typed) and Necessary Explanations (typed) Candidates will prepare a web of activities based on a big play idea. They will be expected to consider the three domains of development and the curriculum areas discussed throughout the Curriculum Development courses and to determine at least 2 different ideas in each area. The study must be planned for children aged 3 – 5 years. The activity ideas mentioned on the web must be developmentally appropriate based on the age group. The students may need to include, on a separate page, a brief description of the activities if they are not easily identified by their titles. (For example, “Finger Painting with Pudding” is self-explanatory. The “Turtle Game”, however, requires a 2-3 sentence explanation for the reader to understand just what is involved in the activity.) In addition to the activity ideas, at least two field trip suggestions and two ideas to encourage parental involvement must also be included. Marks will be given for originality, creativity, resourcefulness, professionalism and full completion of all required aspects. Part B: Documentation (typed) – document how the children will record their findings from their investigations. – variety of methods for documentation used Part C: One Week Study Planning Form and Planning for Groups Form (typed on form provided) Using the ideas generated by the web, students will prepare a one-week plan (study plan) for a topic of study.
