1) I think Equiano is pointing out that slavery is fundamentally shocking – all aspects of it. He talks about the evil that slavery is and how it was an industry implemented by hypocritical Christians which is also a shocking aspect. If being a Christian is loving your neighbor and treating others, they way you want to be treated, then how could such atrocities like splitting up African families and putting monetary value on a human life be committed by the men wanted to build a conservative New World?
2/3) When I think about slavery I tend to think of films like 12 Years a Slave and other movies where slavery is typically shown on plantations. Equiano gives us his life before being “kidnapped” (which is an interesting and completely accurate description), life in the Middle Passage (which I have not heard of nor read any firsthand accounts of), and then gives us the sickening scene of being handed over as property. We all have knowledge of the evils of slavery but it is always accounts such as this which give us a more detailed look into these horrors and broaden our perspective.
