Students are to think about development across the lifespan from the physical, cognitive and social emotional developmental domains.
First students are to think about their own personal development. Students should use their current age bracket as the basis for their paper. Students should submit a self-reflection type paper, meaning students should look at their own life in terms of their current physical, cognitive and social /emotional development as it relates to course material.
Then students should pick 2 age groups that are different than their own and observe those age groups as well in terms of physical, cognitive and social emotional development. The information gathered can be a combination of observation as well as discussion with the subject.
Students should follow this outline for their paper and put information in this order. Please make sure it is a paper format and not simply a list. You may use section headers if you choose.
No outside sources should be used. Everything you need is in your text or course notes.
Students should have several parts to their paper.
- Students should introduce themselves and share their age. Then student should discuss their physical development. They should include 3 topics that are covered in the corresponding textbook chapter. In general most students of traditional college age feel that Chapter 13 will most likely apply. However if you are a younger student you might find that Chapter 11 is a better fit for you.The student should discuss their own development and how it relates to 3 physical development topics covered in the chapter. Are you in agreement with the chapter? No? Why or why not? Make sure to discuss each physical term and explain it and how it relates to you.
- Students should then discuss their cognitive development. Reminder that cognitive information is included in the same physical development chapter so do not get the information confused. Your text does clearly divide physical and cognitive sections. This time students need to address 5 cognitive development topics covered in the chapter that corresponds to their age making sure to explain each and how it relates to your development.
- Finally students should discuss their social/emotional development and relate 5 social / emotional development topics.Again make sure to explain each term in your own words and discuss how it relates to you.Erikson is required for every paper.
- So for the first person you talk to or observe of a different age apply 3 physical, 3 cognitive and 3 social emotional terms for that age group. Again Erikson MUST be used. Depending on the age Piaget would also be used.Again observe or talk to them apply the terms ( meaning say the term, define or explain it and give an example from your subject).
- Then for the second person of a different age start a new section or paragraph and apply 3 physical, 3 cognitive and 3 social emotional terms for that age group. Again Erikson MUST be used. Depending on the age Piaget would also be used.Again observe or talk to them apply the terms ( meaning say the term, define or explain it and give an example from your subject).
- Finally give a brief summary of your findings. This can be just a couple of sentences
Students should then observe and /or talk to people of 2 age groups different than your own, preferable one younger and one older than yourself however you could do both older. You DO have to have at least one group that is older than yours.
Grading will be based on this:
Your own personal physical development 3 topics applied ( stated explained and an example given) 3 points each = 9 points
Your own personal cognitive development 5 topics applied( stated explained and an example given) 3 points each = 15 points
Your own personal social emotional development 5 topics applied ( stated explained and an example given) 3 points each = 15 points
Your first person of a different age 3 physical, 3 cognitive and 3 social emotional terms all applied ( stated explained and an example given)2 point for each physical term and 4 points for each cognitive and social emotional terms = 30 points
Your second person of a different age 3 physical, 3 cognitive and 3 social emotional terms all applied ( stated explained and an example given) 2 point for each physical term and 4 points for each cognitive and social emotional terms = 30 points
Summary = 1 point
Total of 100 points
