The National Cultural and Linguistically Approach Services

The National Cultural and Linguistically Approach Services (CLAS) is a strategic plan that health and health care organizations use as their standards to prevent health disparities and improve the quality of care. The CLAS focuses on 4 standards that outline the various approaches one should take to accomplish reducing health disparities and increasing the quality of care. Therefore, the standard that mostly resonates with me and is more relevant to my interest in public health is the Principal Standard. The principal standard focuses on the importance of diversity and equality by showing respect and empathy when providing care to others regardless of their background. This standard also focuses on providing resources for those affected by language and communication barriers which could result in health disparities (Think Cultural Health, 2021).

Furthermore, I selected this standard because of my cultural background where I have witnessed the lack of Principal Standard being used due to classism and colorism within my country. Moreover, after migrating to the U.S, I have witnessed how racial and socioeconomic factors have led to the increase in health disparities. Therefore, I entered the public health field because of my willingness to help provide quality care to those who need it and help make an impact in the fight against health disparities (Think Cultural Health, 2021).
