This week we explored the current eating disorders included within the DSM-5 diagnostic standards including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, etc. There is another term that some of you may or may not be familiar with called Orthorexia. See more here: org/orthorexia-nervosa“>https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/orthorexia-nervosa and here: com/story/orthorexia-how-my-clean-eating-turned-into-anorexia“>https://www.self.com/story/orthorexia-how-my-clean-eating-turned-into-anorexia.

After reading through both articles discuss how to differentiate between healthy eating and Orthorexia. Can you think of anyone in your life who may fit within the term of Orthorexia? How does our society influence this? How does one recognize the red flags and know at what point their behaviors are potentially causing more harm than good? Think beyond just the physical aspects here given the impact on mental and emotional health. What would be general recommendations for developing a healthier relationship with food and one’s body? As a healthcare professional what can we do to decrease our influence on someone developing an unhealthy obsession with food and weight?

Also consider reading this: https://www.eatingdisorderhope.com/programs/colleges-and-universities/college-and-body-image/dietetic-majors-and-eating-disorders which discusses prevalence of eating disorders among dietetic majors. Feel free to include discussion around this as well.
