You are the team leader on the 7pm-7am shift. There are two CNA’s that work this shift as well and each have 20+ years experience. They have to be asked to provide care and provide moderately good care; they are not self-starters and do not look for opportunity to assist others. A new graduate RN, Adam, started on the shift within the past month who used to work on the floor as a CNA and Adam had great rapport with the other two CNAs. Now, as Adam has moved to the role of RN, the two CNAs barely speak to him and grudgingly assist him when asked to do so; additionally, they do only the minimal work and sometimes does not complete the tasks Adam asks them to complete. The two CNAs only perform minimal duties asked by the other RNs on the floor as well and the two frequently are found talking at the nurses’ station. On the other hand, Adam is a team player, work well with others, and provides excellent nursing care; he ask questions and for help as appropriate for a new grad.

As the team leader, you do not want to lose any staff over this conflict; however, others have voiced that the workplace is becoming uncomfortable. Adam has not said anything to you about this situation, but you heard a rumor that he was in human resources asking about transfer policies.

As the team leader, what are your responsibilities to the staff in this situation? Is this conflict intrapersonal, interpersonal, or organizational? Why?  What are the conflict resolution techniques you can institute as the team leader.
