Hello Class,

Verbal communication skills

  • What are two barriers you experience when you are trying to engage in effective verbal communication?

One of the barriers I experience when communicating is generalizing extensive issues. I have noticed that generalizations undermine my clarity and credibility.

The second barrier is jumping to conclusions. In my few last verbal engagements, I have been Confusing facts with inferences by assuming I know the reasons behind certain events.

  • How can you overcome each of the barriers you identified?

In overcoming generalizations, I have to be sensitive to the complexities of situations rather than viewing the world in black and white and demonstrate an interest in what I am saying. Generalizing cases shows that you have minimal interest in your communication, so you should keenly express your concerns for clarity and credibility.

On my second barrier, Jumping to conclusions, initially, I have to understand that when I  jump to conclusions, I am doing so based on my past experiences and assuming that the other person knows what I am talking about. In overcoming this barrier, I should make inferences based on available information, which is generally a good skill to have in the communication world (Lundquist, 2018).

Written communication skills

  • What are two barriers you experience when you are trying to engage in effective written communication?

One of the barriers I experience while engaging in written communication is spelling errors which imply carelessness in correcting mistakes (Abdikarimova, 2021). Grammar mistakes are another common barrier to me in written communication.

  • How can you overcome each of the barriers you identified?

One way of overcoming these barriers is proofreading, but I have learned that I should not proofread my essay as soon as I finished it. Because I’m acquainted with what I already wrote, either my eyes will miss the mistakes, or my mind will quickly autocorrect my mistakes, convincing my eyes that they’re not there (Abdikarimova, 2021). On the spelling issue consulting the dictionary is the best way to correct the spelling mistakes of the words, which I am not sure of.

The most efficient approach for me to express my point is to do it straightforwardly and straightforwardly, avoiding intricate, complicated formulations and stating my viewpoint in specific terms.

  • Cover and thank you letter

To be effective, the written communication should use the correct tone, inoffensive language, and appropriate grammar (Lundquist, 2018).

In the cover letter, I will ensure good grammar (Links to an external site.) and punctuation (Links to an external site.), which are very important. It is a good idea to have someone else proofread my writing before I send it.
