I believe that a good leader should be supportive and empathetic, yet expect standards of behavior. I also feel that leaders should embrace the strengths of their team, and allow them to flourish. I’ve always said that an employee who feels supported and taken care of will work harder for leadership that appreciates them.
Out of the 5 leadership styles, I previously tested and found that I was of the transformational leadership style, and I feel that I allow others the means to provide their voice and/or collaboration. I feel as though my leadership style is perceived by others as transformational as well, with a bit of the other leadership styles mixed in. I do believe that good work should be rewarded, and bad work should have consequences (IMD, 2021). When people are rewarded for doing great work, they will continue to provide that same high quality work.
Honestly, I feel that my current work environment displays much of the TEACH Values in our daily activities. In the OR, Teamwork is the basis of success. (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2021). We are unable to get through our day without working collaboratively with our fellow teammates. We have to move quickly through our day in order to meet procedure turn-over times, which defines Energy (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2021). Each of us takes Accountability in our daily actions and decisions. In the OR, there are many Type-A personalities who do not mind speaking up and advocating for standards of care (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2021). We exhibit a sense of Community because we daily help one another with tasks in order to help the day move along more efficiently and effectively (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2021). Heart is something that we all strive to provide by proving care to our patients with a sense of zeal, treating them in a way that we, ourselves, would want to be treated (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2021). Our department is not perfect, and we need daily reminders of our goals and expectations. If I would have to choose a TEACH Value concept to improve upon for my department, I would say Energy. Sometimes, when the work day becomes busy, we need reminders on how to build and maintain a positive behaviors and actions (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2021).
