After completing the readings and reviewing of the PowerPoint slides, answer the following questions in a discussion posting (2–3 paragraphs per question). Please use at least two peer-reviewed references in your posting and at least one reference per question.
- Identify from your own experience and your review of course material what you believe are the key traits and skills of an effective manager. Provide a rationale or reference for each trait or skill selected.
- Discuss the ways you serve as a teacher in your current role as a nurse, or in a recent role or position that you have held in the health care environment. Describe the learning opportunities that you have experienced or sought out as a professional nurse, student, etc. What kind of feedback did you receive regarding your teaching and how did it affect you moving forward?
this is an example of my experience as a teacher being a nurse! please feel free to go off of the.
An experience I had being teacher as a nurse was when I educated a patient about his new diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. He was newly diagnosed and did not have any understanding of the cause and medical management of his disease. I asked him if he understood his diagnosis and all he said was “sugar, the doctor said too much sugar, I don’t eat sugar”. According to him, all he was told was that he is diabetic now and he must check his blood sugar and take insulin every day. A Learning opportunity that I have sought out as a nurse would be when I ask my co-workers to show me how to use a certain instrument or equipment while at work.
My initial intervention was to assess his knowledge of his new prognosis, which allowed me to understand his level of understanding. I also asked him what a typical daily diet was like.
In my course of assessment, I realized that my patient does not know the type of food that contains high level of sugar. I understood that talking to him about diabetes will not help neither will handing him a pamphlet about diabetes be helpful.
Then, I developed a plan of teaching based off my assessment. I planned to teach my patient by doing a demonstration of the amount of sugar in soda as an example. I also shared a picture of how much sugar content are in carbohydrate rich foods. I showed how to check his blood sugar and how taking his insulin will reduce the numbers by taking his blood sugar a few hours after administration of insulin.
I evaluated the teaching by asking questions about diabetes, foods to avoid and I had my patient demonstrate how to take his blood sugar. The teaching was a success because all the goals for my patient education were reached.
My learning style is by demonstration; I am a visual learner and I tend to remember certain skills by seeing and repeating it.
I admire the teachers desire to instill knowledge in people because teaching can be very frustrating especially if the person on the receiving end is not learning as fast as you expect them to.
