Your Task:
This essay is to be a history of your sexual socialization, or how you gained knowledge about sexuality [behavior + desire]. Its main purpose is for you to explore how you developed a sexual script (Gagnon & Simon) or your outlook on sexuality, and how your experience is reflected in scholarship on sexuality.
First, answer question (1) and question (2) or (3) or (4).
All:
• Family: Think back to when (or whether) you first developed an awareness of ‘sex’ (and sexuality). How curious were you? What questions did you ask, if at all? Did you ask questions of your parent/parents, caregivers, or other relatives? Why or why not? Did you have an “askable parent” (Gordon & Gordon)? Were you given books to read, or did you seek out information on your own (either openly or secretly)? In what ways were your questions answered?
Select one of these:
• Peers and Groups: Did you belong to or were you involved with any organization or group (including peers) that provided you with information, advice, or values about sexuality? Describe the organization or group and the messages you received from it. Did you ask questions of your group leaders or other members, peers, and friends?
• Sexuality Education: Looking back on your childhood and adolescence, was the “sex ed” information you obtained about sexuality correct or incorrect? What conceptions (or misconceptions) did you develop about reproduction, masturbation, sexual orientation, and sexual behaviors with others? Did you ask questions of your teachers or other professionals?
• Mass Media: What was the impact of the media on your sexual socialization? What do you remember from movies, television shows, music videos, advertisements, etc., that might have influenced your sexual socialization? How influential was social media?
Second, locate an article to help explain your experiences with regard to learning about sexuality. For example, an article in the sociology journal, Contexts, indicates that “communities are communicating messages to teens that work to reproduce their cultural values in the next generation. But … mixed messages may be less effective” (Mollborn, p. 45).
