Final Project Description

The final project will give students the opportunity to analyze real data sets using StatCrunch and provide a summary of the analysis results. Students are expected to complete these assignments following the rubric below by the dates indicated in the course calendar at the end of the syllabus. Please note that final projects will be submitted on Blackboard and are not accepted late under any circumstance.

The topic for this project is “College Success and Work” Students in two Introductory Statistics courses were surveyed and asked several questions about their academic and personal life. We will assume this data represents a random sample of college students. In this exercise, we will use a subset of variables from the survey and use the collected data to answer questions. Note that (1) these are real data, and (2) the symbol * in the worksheet means that this observation is not available (this is known as a “missing value”). The data for this project can be found in StatCrunch. Log on to StatCrunch and click on Data Sets. Then search “MATH 1342 Final Project (Glaser)”. A description of the variables included in the dataset is below.

This assignment will need to be completed using Microsoft Word. If you currently do not have access to Microsoft Word, you can gain free access to Microsoft Word as a Dallas College student. After reading the rubric below and completing all of the requested parts, click on the Projects link in Blackboard and click on the Submit Final Project link to submit your project. When you submit your project, it will go through a Safe Assign process that will check your submission for plagiarism including checking against other student submissions. You are expected to work on this assignment alone and should include a written report that is your original thoughts, ideas, and words. Failure to do so will result in a grade of 0 on this assignment. Final projects will be graded based on the rubric below. Please make sure to include complete sentences and correct grammar and punctuation.

Reflect on Question

Researchers often predict what data will say before analyzing it using previous studies or based on their personal experience with the population they are studying. Before analyzing the data, think about the following question and use your intuition and/or experience.

Research has shown that working too much (more than 20 hours per week) while in college can have a negative impact on student success. Do college students work too much? Is there statistical evidence to support that students work more than 20 hours per week?

In 3 – 5 sentences try and predict what the results will show.

Analyze Data

  • Identify the variable relevant to the question of interest and state whether the variable is categorical or quantitative. Indicate what the null and alternative hypothesis statements are. (5 points)
  • Which hypothesis test technique is appropriate to answer the question of interest (proportion z-test or means t-test) and does the data meet the requirements for conducting this test? (5 points)
  • Include at least one meaningful graphical display (pie chart, bar graph, histogram, boxplot, etc.) related to the question(s) and interpret the display. (20 points)
  • Conduct the appropriate hypothesis test. Include and interpret the test statistic and p-value relevant to the hypothesis test conducted. (20 points)

Draw Conclusions

  • Summarize the results from the hypothesis test in context of the current question making sure to state whether the null hypothesis is rejected or not and reasoning for this conclusion. Use α = 0.05. (10 points)
  • Recall your answer noted in the Reflect on Question section above. In at least 2 sentences, describe how your initial expectations differ (or not) from the actual results. (10 points)
  • Put your researcher cap on! Who would benefit from this analysis and why should anyone care? In at least 3 sentences, describe how these results could be used in practice. (10 points)
