Directions for the notes and summary:
1) Finish reading and taking notes on the article “It All Started with Sputnik”. Use the blank Concept Map document from this Module to take notes for each heading. Notes should be brief, clear, and in your own words. Remember to turn each heading into a question to focus on.
2) WRITE a one-paragraph summary of the Sputnik article. Use your notes to help you organize your summary.
–Start with the main idea sentence that includes the title, author, and main idea of the article (all in one sentence).
–Then, look at your notes; consider the 4 article headings and what the focus was of each section of the article. Use a clear transition word or phrase to start each section in your summary (such as First, Second, Third…). Limit yourself to TWO SENTENCES for each heading. It’s a long article, and you can’t include everything; that’s why you use the focus questions.
–Since the last section of the article is a conclusion, you don’t really need a separate concluding sentence for your summary paragraph. TOTAL: 9 sentences.
–Format and proofread. Don’t skip this step!
