Northern Virginia Community College Bread Label Worksheet

Most people learn about nutrition from reading the labels on foods. Unfortunately, most people can not interpret what the numbers mean in relationship to health. This activity will allow you to practice reading and interpreting the nutritional value of a food based on the Nutrition Facts Panel on foods. Some nutrient recommendations are beneficial when exceeded (like fiber or vitamin C), some nutrient recommendation should not be exceeded but kept as low as possible (such as cholesterol). This worksheet is to provide you the opportunity to interpret the positive and negative contributions of a product as it relates to your dietary recommendations. This will help you learn what nutrient information is required on a food label and to interpret what that information means in terms of making healthy food choices.

Directions

  1. Select any bread or roll product you use at home that has a nutrition facts panel.
  2. Investigate the label and then complete this bread label worksheet.
  3. Read the FDA allergen labeling act for more information on label requirements for the top 8 allergens: http://www.fda.gov/Food/GuidanceRegulation/GuidanceDocumentsRegulatoryInformation/Allergens/ucm106187.htm (Links to an external site.).
